Jewelry Display Case Tutorial
September 9, 2007 by Carolina González
This case was made for my new jewelry collection, from a cardboard box in the shape of a case, which belonged to a big doll. It is the size of a regular small case.
First thing I did was taking off the original plastic handle and closures. It was covered in vintage fabric and adorned with satin ribbon. The closures were made of velcro and the handle was recycled from another bag and padded with a small cushion in the same fabric.
NOTE: everything in this case was made only with scissors, kid’s craft glue and the hot glue gun. There is not a stitch here - I’m not that good at sewing! Keep scrolling pics to see how it was made!
This pic shows the lower part of the case: since it will be on the floor often it needed special attention. I covered it with the back of an old suede jacket and added four bottle toppers as legs, covered in fabric and ribbon.
Inside: all the pieces inside were covered in the same vintage wallpaper. On the inside of the lid you can find a mirror and two padded hoops to hang necklaces. The first box you see inside is an earring box (more pictures, keep scrolling), but there is another level under the box.
Lower level: All the pieces were made from isolation board (just foam and cardboard, easy to cut) and covered in wallpaper. Notice the space for rings - just more foam, cut in slices and covered with fabric. Also, the box on the upper right corner is removable, making the lower space more versatile.
The earring case, upper level. Again made from isolation board and wallpaper. The lid is made of plastic mesh to stick more earrings or brooches - see next pics for more details. The closure was made in velcro too.
Box open: notice the small pieces of ribbon the hold the lid, and how the mesh is perfect for special earrings (or studs too).
Back of the earring box. The joints were made with strong ribbon and leather bits - this is important if you want to make one! Also, notice the small hoops on the right: they’re there to put out the box easily from the case, as there is not much room left inside to prevent things from flowing everywhere while the case is carried.
And a small tip that just came along the way: Earring tags with a small strip of cardboard added to prevent hooks from falling off - a real pain when you make jewelry!
Well, I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. It took two days of hard work but the jewelry looks so much better this way, and being all made of cardboard the case is really light and portable. Soon, pics of the new pieces!

Another great jewelry display idea! Thanks you so much for sharing! And one could easily change the look by choosing different papers/fabrics. Do you mind if I post a link to it on Art Bead Scene?
but of course Melanie!
This box is both beautiful and ingenious!!
Good idea with the earring cards, I had that problem of earrings jumping off of cards all summer!
I absolutely love that a glue gun played a big part in this! (Of course). Thanks for such a beautifully made craft.
Thanks for all your sweet comments! This was a real challenge - in fact I couldn’t believe I had finished it LOL!
Ooh, this is SUCH a cool display!!!!~
I think this is so pretty. What a great touch you have with presenting your collection.
dear carolina, thank you, thank you for the beautiful tutorials you provide us with— i hope you wont mind if i adapt the great box for my grand daughters, perhaps a smaller version. thanks again for you’r generosity. haydee
This is an incredible display and very ingenious design that you have made look soooo easy and yet so elegant. Thank you for sharing your ideas. You really thought out the materials you used very well — I especially like using that old suede jacket for the strength needed on the back of the case. (I often save that kind of thing “just in case I find a need for it” and you certainly proved how to make use of readily available stuff and make a really elegant display. Kudos. And thanks again for sharing! I’ve done a lot of “showcasing” my needlework while teaching but have have been “branching” out to experience the joy of beads the past few years.
What a fabulous idea. I have some boxes that are styled like a suitcase. My Mom gave my 3 daughters & I, our Christmas gifts in them. The pattern is not really something any of us like. They would be perfect. The boxes have feet and a handle. I will just apply wallpaper, dividers and fabric.
I would love to add this to my blog, of course sending the credit your way. Is that all right?
Thanks, aimZ
Absolutely stunning! I love it. I’m going to link to this for my “jewelry marketing tips” blog!
Have you thought about creating these for sale? I would love to have one of these. Thanks for the idea!
